The True Treasures of The Church
Hello everyone. How are you doing? This is one of my favorite pieces and took several years to complete. I remember a few years ago I was doing a photo shoot at a church, taking several pictures of the architecture and being so moved when I saw a family coming out of the building. I had been studying art and painting for years, but found myself so lonely and desiring a family of my own. I am not saying that architecture and church art are not wonderful and beautiful, they truly are! But the more time I spent trying to be an academic, the lonelier and lonelier I felt.
Something in me changed after that day, as much as I love beautiful churches, I didn't want to be alone anymore, I couldn't handle it. That day I realized that as much as I had wanted my mission to be to bring back beautiful art into churches, I found myself wishing to be the family coming out of the church service instead. I am not suggesting that we should use discontentment to motivate us, but I realized that people are more important than things that day. And work is good, but having no one to share life is so hard.
The people in this painting are children and women who have come to Jesus. For the past few years I had been inspired by this theme of our Lord with children or showing pictures of baby Jesus with Mary and Joseph. The warmth and love and tenderness in these pictures truly inspired me! More recently though, I have been moving away from historical depictions into painting portraits of people as themselves alive today!
The artwork I have been doing involves children and animals and the blessings that they are to others. The bible says that children are a blessing! And I want my work to carry a strong pro-life message that children are valuable to God.
