Art for Children, for Homes, and for Families
Do you ever find yourself wondering, who is my audience? Who are my people? We hear about this a lot in business and in art. Who is your ideal client?
When I think of that answer, I think of a lot of things. I have wondered who my audience is over time, who am I speaking to? What kinds of things do they want and need? What do I have that I can share with them I would enjoy?
When I illustrated this book, this was one of the things I was thinking about. I wanted to create a book that took the words of a classical Lutheran Hymn, and pair it with illustrations. But what would these illustrations look like? What is the world I would be trying to create? Is there a mood or a feeling? A book I illustrated before was in the style of fairytales and illuminated manuscripts. Another book I illustrated was more about the reality of life and death in this world, hence my representations were based off of life.
This book, I was inspired by a park that I commonly go to near my house. It is a park that I frequently walk at with my parents now! Some of the scenes in the book are from scenes at the park. Others are from my imagination and others are based off of real life scenes.
A lot of the book is also my hopes and dreams for the future. I am well aware that life will not be perfect ever, but sometimes those hopes can inspire us to be the best version of ourselves. Goals can be burdensome or inspiring and motivating depending on how we look at them.
My audience is the church, the old and the young...families and those alone. Anyone who needs God's love and mercy...and so in some ways my audience is myself too.
