The Enchantment of Childhood
Do you remember being a little boy or little girl? I do. I loved it! I remember things like macaroni and cheese and my mom making chocolate chip cookies from a cake mix. I remember my dad reading illustrated books at bedtime. My mother made these beautiful little dresses with calico fabric. When I look back, I see that my childhood was magical.
I was thinking about that wonder I experienced as a child growing up when I painted this picture of a little boy. When you grow up, that magic is harder to see I think...meaning you have to train your brain to see beautiful things. You have to pause and find things to be thankful for. It is a mental exercise for me as an artist "how can I see the good? how can I see the true? How can I look for the beautiful?"
These are the ideas I want to communicate to parents when they ask me to make a portrait of their son or daughter. I want them to remember the good, the true, and the beautiful in their children. Treasure those moments with your little ones, they are so worth it!
